Dismal Saudi rights record

The rights situation in Saudi Arabia was in the global spotlight after a recent study provided a dismal outlook of how the kingdom has been treating dissent. An inquiry by the United Nations says the kingdom is systematically using anti-terror laws to justify torture, suppress all dissent and imprison human rights defenders. The inquiry says many have already languished in prison for years and that others have been executed after blatant miscarriages of justice.

Anger at US

This year’s International Quds Day rallies came against a backdrop of tensions in the occupied Palestinian territories. Millions of Muslims and even non-Muslims took part in the protests worldwide to mark Quds Day, which falls on the last day of the fasting month of Ramadan. During this year’s demonstrations, protesters vented their anger at the US for the recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital and also at the Israeli regime for killing scores of Palestinians in the weeks leading to Nakba, the anniversary of Israel’s creation.
