UN indifferent toward Yemen's catastrophe: Analyst

An analyst believes the United Nations seems indifferent to the crisis in Yemen, saying it is being “superseded” by the United States to not interfere in the ongoing conflict in the impoverished Arab nation.

“What is going on is really a catastrophe. The only port of entry for humanitarian aid -- Hudaydah -- is being attacked by the Saudis and backed by the Americans and no one seems to care neither about the children who are dying every day in huge numbers because of lack of food and because of lack of medication and … cholera is spreading there and now all the bombardment from the Saudis on … Hudaydah city which resulted in so many casualties, including women and children,” Jalal Fairooz told Press TV in an interview on Monday.

“Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and you can see how the situation is going down the drain … A marriage gathering just a few days ago was attacked by the Saudi air force and one from the United Nations did not care to condemn this nonsense which is going on in Yemen,” he added.

Backed by Saudi-led airstrikes, Emirate forces and militants loyal to the former Yemeni government launched the Hudaydah assault on June 13 despite warnings that it would compound the impoverished nation’s humanitarian crisis.

Saudi Arabia and its allies launched the war on Yemen in March 2015 to reinstall Yemen’s former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

The war and an accompanying blockade have caused famine across Yemen. The United Nations says a record 22.2 million people are in need of food aid, including 8.4 million threatened by severe hunger.

Several Western countries are supplying the Riyadh regime with advanced weapons and military equipment.
