Giuliani: Trump shouldn’t issue pardons in Russia probe

The US president’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, says Donald Trump will not issue any pardons in the ongoing Russia investigation so he could reveal the “extremely unfair” nature of the probe.

"The President has issued no pardons in this investigation," Giuliani told CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday. "The President is not going to issue pardons in this investigation. And my advice to him, you know, as long as I'm his lawyer, is not to do it because you just cloud what is becoming now a very clear picture of an extremely unfair investigation with no criminality involved in it of any kind."

However, Giuliani said later in the interview that Trump could pardon people who were treated "unfairly" once the probe led by former FBI Director Robert Mueller is through.

“When it’s over, hey, he’s the president of the United States. He retains his pardon power,” he said. “Nobody’s taking that away from him. He can pardon in his judgment based on the Justice Department, counsel’s office, not me. I’m out of it. And I shouldn’t be involved in that process because I’m probably too rooted in his defense, but I couldn’t and I don’t want to take prerogatives away from him.”

Manafort arrest

Tapper’s questions were prompted by the recent jailing of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort in a witness-tampering case and speculations that Trump could potentially pardon him.

A US federal judge revoked bail conditions for Manafort, sending him to jail pending trial after a charge of witness tampering.

After the ruling, Trump tweeted, "What a tough sentence for Paul Manafort, who has represented Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and many other top political people and campaigns."

US Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russia’s alleged role in the 2016 US election, recently said that Manafort had “conspired to corruptly persuade” two potential witnesses to influence their accounts of his lobbying on behalf of political parties in Ukraine.
