WHO warns about Hudaydah

The director-general of the World Health Organization has sounded the alarm about a catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Yemeni port city of Hudaydah amid the ongoing Saudi-led assault. In a statement, Tedros Adhanom expressed concern about the impact of the attack on civilians’ lives in Hudaydah. He stressed that the port city is an essential lifeline for the country. Adhanom said more than 70 percent of all food items, essential medicines and healthcare supplies are brought into Yemen through Hudaydah. Meanwhile, the United Nations’ World Food Program has called on the warring sides in Yemen to maintain a free food flow through the port city.

Greece political clashes

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has survived a no-confidence vote in parliament over an agreement with Macedonia to settle a long dispute over its name. The motion was brought by the opposition New Democracy party. 153 lawmakers voted against the motion, while 127 others voted in favor of it. Tsipras is accused of making too many concessions in the deal. Meanwhile, Clashes have erupted between police and protesters in the Greek capital Athens during a rally against the deal to rename the country’s northern neighbor, the Republic of North Macedonia.

Londoners protest over Grenfell fire

Protesters have converged on Downing Street in the British capital to demand justice for the survivors and victims of the Grenfell disaster. Just over a year ago, a tower block fire in London claimed the lives of 72 people. With an ongoing inquiry into the fire and calls for those responsible to be held to account, the demonstrators want to ensure the government would hear their demands. Amina Taylor reports from London.

Saudi war on Yemen

Yemen’s Ansarullah movement denies reports that Saudi-backed forces have taken control of Hudaydah’s airport. The group said the footage aired by its rivals' TV networks showing a fence belonging to the airport is actually on land that belongs to a lawmaker. The Ansarullah, however, said that Saudi-led airstrikes have completely destroyed the airport. The movement and its army allies are engaged in fierce clashes with Saudi-backed former Yemeni regime loyalists for the control of the key port city of Hudaydah. The clashes began on Wednesday, after Saudi-led troops attacked the city, despite warnings by the United Nations about humanitarian consequences. Meanwhile, an Ansarullah source says they’ve captured a vessel off Hudaydah, which they believe to belong to the US or France.

Italians protest inequality

Thousands of Italians have marched in central Rome to protest what they call growing social inequality in their country. The protesters say the new government’s planned set of reforms will widen the gap between the rich and the poor and will promote anti-migrant sentiment. Max Civili reports from the Italian capital.

Immigrant boat in Spain

The first batch of refugees from Aquarius rescue ship has arrived in Spain. The group onboard an Italian navy vessel docked at the Spanish port of Valencia on Sunday. Regional authorities say the rest of the refugees will also be brought in later in the day. Last week, Italy and Malta refused to take in the charity-run boat carrying over 600 mainly sub-Saharan African asylum-seekers. Although Spain offered to accept the stranded refugees, Italy’s decision caused a diplomatic spat with its European partners.
