US President Donald Trump’s targeting of immigrants who allegedly violate immigration and citizenship laws shows the depths of his contempt for people of color and his attempt to Make America White Again, according to Myles Hoenig, an American political analyst and activist.

The Trump administration is launching an unprecedented effort to strip US citizenship from thousands of immigrants who may have lied or falsified information on their naturalization forms.

The US government agency that oversees immigration applications is opening an office in Los Angeles, California, that will focus on identifying individuals who are suspected of cheating to get their American citizenship and seek to deport them.

“Although it is not a serious problem, only 305 cases in 28 years, the Trump administration is using all its resources, and more, to target immigrants who abuse citizenship laws,” said Hoenig, a former Green Party candidate for Congress.

“No one would truly deny that the federal government has a right, even an obligation, to ferret out those who abuse immigration law and achieve citizenship illegally. However, the message is clear coming from this administration. Immigration is seen as more of a threat to this country than nearly anything else,” Myles said in an interview with Press TV on Thursday.

“We don’t see the IRS hiring lawyers and accountants to target the very wealthy and corporations who hide their money overseas to avoid taxes. The military has admitted that it cannot account for trillions of dollars, or that amount has been improperly accounted for. That’s a big news story but no follow up on the government doing anything about it, likely because nothing would be done about it,” he added.

“Immigration is red meat for the Trump base. As Ronald Reagan hyperbolically used the ‘welfare queen’ to denigrate all people on welfare while millions of dollars were wasted or misused on corporate welfare, Trump is using immigration as a rallying cry for political gain,” he stated.

“George W. Bush was able to use the simplistic slogan of ‘you’re either with us or against us’ to rally America around invisible enemies, primarily Muslims, out to destroy the very foundations of America because ‘they hate our freedom’.  Targeting minority populations has always worked for despots. Whether it was Hitler targeting Jews of Germany, Bush targeting Muslims in America, or now Trump targeting mostly people of color trying to secure a better life by coming here, scapegoating works,” the analyst noted.

“The Democrats should not be spared the scrutiny. Even in President Obama’s slowest year, he had outpaced Trump on deportations. Either he was less ostentatious about it or his base just waited for Republicans to take over and continue such attacks on immigrants, just like the anti-war movement is only awake during Republican administrations,” he pointed out.

“Trump’s targeting of the very small number of those who violate immigration and citizenship laws only shows the depths of his contempt for people of color and his attempt to Make America White Again,” he concluded.
