US-North Korea summit

US President Donald Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un are holding a key summit in Singapore. The two leaders shook hands upon their arrival at Capella hotel which is the summit venue. They have already ended their one-on-one meeting and now holding extended talks along with their top officials. Earlier, Trump predicted a terrific relationship with Pyongyang. The North Korean Leader said the two sides have overcome the obstacles of a difficult history. The denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula has been the main agenda of this summit. Washington says Pyongyang has to put away its entire nuclear and missile programs in a way which is verifiable and irreversible. It’s not clear if the North agrees to such demand.

Canada parliament condemns US

Canadian lawmakers have unanimously approved a motion condemning the US officials’ verbal attacks on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The motion rejected what it called disparaging ad hominem statements by US officials which do a disservice to bilateral relations. It also backed the country’s steel and aluminum sectors, hit by US tariffs, as well as the supply management system that supports key agricultural firms. The vote came a day after White House trade adviser said "There is a special place in hell" for Trudeau for his "bad faith diplomacy" with Trump. Meanwhile, the Canadian province of Quebec has offered over 77 million dollars in loans and guarantees to steel and aluminum companies hit by recent US tariffs.

Immigration limitation in US

The US attorney general has announced more restrictions on migrants seeking asylum in the country. Jeff Sessions declared that claims of domestic violence or violence from criminal gangs are not acceptable for seeking asylum in the US. He said an alien might suffer threats and violence in a foreign country for any number of reasons. Sessions added that the asylum statute does not provide redress for all misfortune. The decision could have wide-ranging impacts on immigrants especially from Central America seeking refuge in the US from violence in their home countries. The administration of President Donald Trump has been taking tough stances on asylum seekers, under the pretext of curbing the flood of illegal immigrants.

Saudi attack on Yemen condemned

International charity organization Doctors Without Borders has condemned an attack by Saudi Arabia and its allies on one of its medical facilities in Yemen’s northwest. The MSF says there were no casualties but it temporarily halts its activities in the Abs region until the safety of its staff and patients is guaranteed. The charity said the warplanes identified the cholera treatment clinic from its roof as the building's coordinates had already been given to the coalition. Days ago the International Committee of the Red Cross announced it had moved over 70 staff members out of Yemen due to security concerns.

Syria civilian casualties

The US-led coalition has carried out a fresh airstrike in Syria, causing more deaths and destruction in the war-battered country. At least 18 civilians, most of them Iraqi refugees, lost their lives after US warplanes targeted a school in Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah. Women and children are among the victims. The coalition has been conducting airstrikes in Syria since September 2014. Many civilians have been killed in such raids that purportedly hit the positions of Daesh terrorists in the country. Damascus has repeatedly said the US military presence on its soil is an act of aggression and a violation of the country’s sovereignty.

Eastern Ukraine peace plan

The German foreign minister says Russia and Ukraine have failed to agree on how to implement an agreed ceasefire in eastern Ukraine. Heiko Maas mediated the four-way peace talks in Berlin along with his French counterpart. The four countries focused on implementing an unfulfilled peace agreement reached in 2015. Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, described the talks as useful. The meeting was the first between the four since February 2017. The conflict in Eastern Ukraine, which began in 2014, has claimed the lives of some ten-thousand people so far. Kiev accuses Moscow of providing military support for anti-government militias. Russia denies the accusation.
