Death toll from volcanic eruption in Guatemala

The death toll from the volcanic eruptions in Guatemala rises to 62. A new explosion spewed additional flows of mud, ash and gas into the air on Monday. It interrupted efforts by rescue workers to reach people trapped in houses covered with ash. The explosion also halted rescue efforts on the southern slopes of the Fuego volcano. Guatemala’s national disaster agency says hundreds of people have been injured and over two-thousand evacuated. Guatemala City's international airport has also been shut down.

Civilian casualties by US-led coalition in Syria

Amnesty International says the US-led coalition has violated international humanitarian law during the operation to capture the northern Syrian city of Raqqa from Daesh last year. The rights group said it has interviewed over 100 civilian residents of Raqqa, many of whom lost their loved ones in the US-led strikes. The group said four of the civilians had lost 81 family members in bombings that leveled entire buildings full of civilians. Amnesty said witness accounts show no Daesh terrorists were in the vicinity when the buildings were hit. The group said direct attacks on civilians and indiscriminate strikes amount to potential war crimes. It called for an investigation.

Trump claims absolute right to pardon himself

The US President says he has an absolute right to pardon himself of any crime raising speculations that he might take extraordinary action to immunize himself from an inquiry into his possible collusion with Russia. In his latest tweet, Trump, however, suggested that he would not have to pardon himself since he had done nothing wrong. He also once again took a jab on Special Counsel Robert Mueller, declaring his Russia investigation as totally unconstitutional. This comes as the White House and Mueller’s team are preparing for a possible high-stake legal showdown over whether Trump will agree to or be forced to testify in the probe. Mueller is investigating the Trump campaign's alleged collusion with Moscow during the 2016 election and whether the president sought to obstruct justice. So far, the investigation has indicted 19 people and 3 companies but has not come up with any allegations against the president himself.

US to keep sanctions on North Korea

The US says it will preserve its sanctions policy on Pyongyang despite President Donald Trump’s planned summit with North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un. White House Spokeswoman, Sarah Sanders, made the comments during a briefing on Monday. She said preparations for the June 12 summit in Singapore are going well. North Korea’s denuclearization is the main issue of the talks. Washington wants Pyongyang to quickly give up all its nuclear and missile programs in a verifiable way in return for economic relief. North Korea says it wants security guarantees that the US will not try to topple Kim if he abandons nukes.
