Iranian athletes have managed to grab two bronze medals at the Heydar Aliyev International Orienteering Cup in Azerbaijan.

Parviz Khanjani vied against rivals in the men’s long distance (12-kilometer) stage, and claimed the third spot.

Safiehsadat Mousavian took part in the women’s middle distance (7.5-kilometer) competitions, and took home the bronze.

The Heydar Aliyev International Orienteering Cup is an annual international orienteering event, which has been held by the Azerbaijan Orienteering Federation since 2013.

It has 3 stages: First Stage: Icheri-Sheher (Old City) - sprint orienteering, Second Stage: Galaalty - middle distance and Third Stage: Nabran - long distance.

The Orienteering Association of the Islamic Republic of Iran had dispatched a 15-strong delegation to this year’s event. President of the association, Qodratollah Azimian, headed the group.

Orienteering consists of a group of sports, which requires navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed.

A topographical map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, is distributed among athletes, which they use to find control points.
