Russia Syria casualties

Moscow says at least four Russian soldiers have been killed in a terrorist attack on the Syrian government artillery in eastern Syria. The Russian Defense Ministry says the incident happened in the province of Dayr al-Zawr. Five other soldiers were wounded in the assault. A war monitoring group however, has put the death toll of Russian forces at nine. It says 26 Syrian forces were also killed. The incident happened after Daesh terrorists attacked an artillery battery belonging to the Syrian army. Over 40 terrorists were also killed after Syrian and Russian forces responded to their attack. Russia has had an active military role in Syria in an attempt to drive out foreign-backed militants from the Arab country.

UK arms sales to Israel

A new report reveals that the United Kingdom is selling record amounts of arms to Israel. The Campaign Against Arms Trade organization says in 2017 the UK sold weapons worth 221 million pounds to Israel. The figure indicates a huge increase compared to 86 million pounds in 2016 and 20 million pounds in 2015. Now Israel is UK arms companies’ eighth largest market. The arms exported to Israel include missiles, weapon sights and sniper rifles. The revelation comes amid ongoing clashes in the Gaza Strip. Israel has stepped up its attacks on Gaza ever since Palestinians began the Great March of Return protests on March 30. Since then, Israeli forces have killed at least 124 Palestinians and injured thousands more.

Gaza toll rising

At least three Palestinians have been killed and another injured in an Israeli shelling in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian health ministry has confirmed the deaths in the Israeli tank attack in the Rafah neighborhood. The ministry says the injured Gazan remains in critical condition. The attack comes hours after Israeli warplanes bombed the besieged coastal enclave. The previous attacks targeted positions of the Palestinian resistance movement, but no death or injuries were reported. Israel has stepped up its attacks on Gaza ever since Palestinians began the Great March of Return protests on March 30. At least 125 Palestinians have been killed and thousands more injured since then. The United Nations has accused Israel of using wholly disproportionate force.

Controversial maneuvers

US navy warships have once more sailed near Chinese islands in the South China Sea in a move likely to anger Beijing. US officials, requesting anonymity, said a missile destroyer and a missile cruiser sailed within 12 nautical miles of the Paracel Islands. The officials said the warships carried out maneuvering exercises near the islands. Washington has deployed warships to the area several times over the past months. The US claims this is an attempt to protect freedom of navigation in international waters. Earlier this week, the US also withdrew an invitation to China for major drills in the Pacific over what officials described as Beijing’s militarization of disputed islands. China has in the past strongly protested Washington’s naval maneuvers in the area as a threat to its sovereignty.

‘Iran ready for enrichment’

Iran says it’s ready to resume its suspended nuclear activities including 20 percent uranium enrichment. A spokesman for Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said Tehran will do so if Europe fails to meet its demands. Behrouz Kamalvandi said if the US hampers Iran’s oil sales, Europe must buy Iranian crude as much as Tehran needs. Kamalvandi added that Iran does not intend to pick a fight with Germany, Britain and France but it does not trust them. He said the three signatories to the nuclear deal should translate words into action.

Ukraine violence surges

Pro-Russia fighters kill three government forces in Ukraine’s east. Ukraine's defense ministry says one soldier died in fighting late Saturday. It also says two other servicemen were killed in shelling in the Luhansk region. There has been a surge in violence in eastern Ukraine over the past few weeks. Ukraine says the conflict in the country’s east has killed over 10,000 people since it began in April 2014. Kiev accuses Russia of sending troops and arms across the border to help anti-government militias. Moscow denies the allegation.
