Israel attacks Gaza

Israeli jets have bombarded the Gaza Strip. Witnesses say the attacks targeted positions belonging to the Palestinian Resistance Movement, Hamas. Our correspondent Ashraf Shannon tells us more about the attack.

Inter-Korean meeting

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un expresses his fixed will on a summit with US President Donald Trump in a meeting with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in. According to North’s media, the two leaders held in-depth talks at the truce village of Panmunjom about making the June 12 summit a successful one. During the talks, the pair vowed to work toward the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Kim and Moon also agreed to meet frequently in the future, setting June first as the date of their first meeting. The two-hour meeting came after Trump indicated the summit could be salvaged after initially cancelling it. Pyongyang later said it was willing to talk at any time and in any form.

Venezuela frees US citizens

In an unexpected move, Venezuela releases an American missionary and his wife who were held in custody since 2016. Josh Holt was freed a day after a meeting between US Senator Bob Corker and Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro. Venezuelan Communications Minister said Caracas made the decision to maintain respectful diplomatic relations with Washington. Holt and his wife had been charged with espionage, violence and spreading activities against Venezuela's constitutional order. Their release came amid heightened tensions between Caracas and Washington. In tit-for-tat moves, the US and Venezuela ordered expulsion of diplomatic envoys.

Iran dismisses US demands

The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council says Tehran will never give in to excessive demands listed by the US secretary of state last week. Ali Shamkhani said in an interview with al-Jazeera that Iran will not negotiate on its defensive missile capabilities. He noted that such demands are meant to destroy Iran’s deterrence power. Shamkhani also said that Iran will continue to support its regional allies such as Syria and Iraq as long as their people and governments want it to. He also reiterated support for the Lebanese resistance movement and the Palestinian people against the Israeli aggression. Shamkhani said Iran’s policies are in line with the will of the people in the region, stressing that it is the US, and not Iran, that should change its policies and respect the will of other nations.

Syria security

Seven years of violence came to an end in Damascus last week after the city’s suburbs were fully liberated from foreign-backed terrorists. For the first time since 2011, local people in these areas can lead normal lives without fearing mortars and snipers. Press TV’s Zahraa al-Derzi has visited one of these newly-liberated towns and sent us this report.

Israel kills 2 Palestinians

At least two Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli shelling in the Gaza Strip. Reports say an Israeli tank targeted the Rafah neighborhood in southern Gaza. The attack comes hours after Israeli warplanes bombed the besieged coastal enclave. The previous attacks targeted positions of the Palestinian Resistance Movement, but no death or injuries were reported. Israel has stepped up its attacks on Gaza ever since Palestinians began the Great March of Return protests on March 30. At least 124 Palestinians have been killed and thousands more injured since then. The United Nations has accused Israel of using wholly disproportionate force.

Qatar’s ban on Saudi goods

Qatar’s economy ministry has ordered stores to immediately remove goods originating from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Egypt. The ministry emphasized that inspectors will make visits to ensure compliance with the order. It said efforts will also be made to stop such products from entering Qatar via a third country. Doha says the move aims at protecting the safety of consumers since products originating from these countries cannot undergo proper import inspections and customs procedures. The Saudi-led group of countries cut diplomatic and trade relations with Qatar on June 5 last year, suspending air and shipping routes with Doha. The four countries accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism, a charge Doha has repeatedly denied.
