The Iran men’s national five-a-side football team has claimed the second spot overall at the conclusion of an international tournament in Belgium.

On Tuesday, the Iranian side suffered a narrow 0-1 from the Japan national team in its last match of the competition, the Islamic Republic of Iran Sports Federation for the Blind website reported.

Iran’s Maysam Shojaeian received the best goalkeeper award. Iran also grabbed the fair play award at the tournament.

The Iran men’s national five-a-side football team trounced Belgium’s Charleroi team 6-1 in its opening match.

Rasoul Baseri scored a hat trick, while Hojjat Mazarei netted a brace. Hossein Rajabpour was on target once.

The Iranian Paralympic footballers took on counterparts from Germany’s Koln in their second showdown, and routed the team 7-1.

Behzad Zad-Aliasghar and Baseri jabbed three goals each, while Mohammad Reza Mehni scored just one goal.

The international five-a-side football tournament in Belgium brought together teams from the host nation, Germany, the Islamic Republic of Iran and Japan.

Five-a-side football includes a smaller pitch, smaller goals, and a reduced game duration. The penalty area is semi-circular in shape. There are no offside rules and headers are not allowed.  Players are also required to wear shin guards but this is usually at the discretion of the referee.
