Trump thanks N Korea over vow to scrap nuclear site

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (L) and US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump thanks North Korea for showing willingness to scrap a nuclear site.

In a tweet on Saturday, the president asserted that such a move would be "a very smart and gracious gesture."

"North Korea has announced that they will dismantle Nuclear Test Site this month, ahead of the big Summit Meeting on June 12th," Trump tweeted. "Thank you, a very smart and gracious gesture!"

Pyongyang has announced that it would dismantle the test site by the end of May, just before a scheduled meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore on June 12.

Pyongyang initially announced last month that it would to decommission the site following a thaw in ties with the South and Washington.

The move is expected to take place between May 23-25, "depending on weather condition,”

Trump has been trying to negotiate with North Korea in an effort to denuclearize the country.

Amid escalating tensions between Washington and Pyongyang, Trump recently, made an unexpected decision to meet with the North Korean leader.

Tensions escalated between the two countries after Trump warned to “totally destroy” North Korea during a speech to the UN General Assembly.

The Trump-Kim summit would mark the first such meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader in history.
