A total of 1,261 confirmed cases of yellow fever caused 409 deaths in Brazil from July 2017 to the 8th of this month, according to the data released by the Brazilian Ministry of Health recently.

The data shows cases of yellow fever in the country have continued to increase since 2018.

The World Health Organization declared the state of Sao Paulo as a high-risk area for yellow fever on January 16th this year and recommended tourists to get vaccinated against yellow fever in advance.

The Brazilian Ministry of Health also announced a nationwide vaccination campaign against yellow fever on March 20th and the program will continue until April 2019.

Experts reminded the public that although yellow fever fears will be eased as Brazil enters winter, it is still necessary to strengthen the prevention of epidemics and pay close attention to the promotion of yellow fever vaccinations.

Yellow fever is an acute infectious disease caused by the yellow fever virus. It is mainly transmitted by the bite of Aedes mosquito and is more prevalent in tropical regions of Africa and Latin America.

Usually, the Amazon region in northern Brazil is a concentrated area where yellow fever occurs. The yellow fever epidemic has spread to urban areas since last year.

Yellow fever disease patients and fatal cases have also occurred in cities in southeastern Brazil, including Sao Paulo and Mina. The state of Rio de Janeiro has seen more serious cases.
