Death toll rises in Nicaragua as anti-Ortega protests roil country

Nicaraguans have taken to the streets of Managua, after a spike in the country's death toll following weeks of unrest against President Daniel Ortega.

After a violent crackdown by police earlier this week, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of the capital Managua on Friday to demand the resignation of Ortega, a former leftist guerrilla leader whom critics accuse of trying to build a family dictatorship.

On May 10, an 18-year-old was reportedly shot at the capital's Polytechnic University during a sit-in of students. Eleven others were reportedly injured. In another reported event, two students were killed at a separate university south of the capital.

According to reports cited by the United Nations, at least 47 Nicaraguans have been killed during demonstrations, the majority of them students. The protests began as a reaction to social security reforms but have since widened to include demands for justice for the killings.

The UN human rights office has asked Nicaragua to let it enter the country to gather evidence about the deaths of dozens of students in protests amidst international concern.
