Rand Paul flips, voices support for hawkish Pompeo

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul (L) and US President Donald Trump

US Senator Rand Paul has voiced support for nomination of former CIA Director Mike Pompeo as the new secretary of state in the administration of US President Donald Trump.

"Having received assurances from President Trump and Director Pompeo that he agrees with the President on these important issues, I have decided to support his nomination to be our next Secretary of State," the Kentucky lawmaker said in tweet on Monday.

The last minute flip-flop would pave the way for the anti-Iran figure to get closer to the post previously occupied by Rex Tillerson.

As the result, Pompeo would be reported favorably out of the US Senate's Foreign Relations Committee.

Trump himself warned against opposition to Pompeo’s nomination earlier in the day.

"Hard to believe Obstructionists May vote against Mike Pompeo for Secretary of State. The Dems will not approve hundreds of good people, including the Ambassador to Germany. They are maxing out the time on approval process for all, never happened before. Need more Republicans!" tweeted the president.

Democrats are worried that Pompeo's hawkish posture on foreign policy could wreak a havoc in the world specially at a time that the White House is also enjoying a similar figure as Trump’s new national security adviser, John Bolton.
