Fate of Sheikh Zakzaky
In December 2015, the Nigerian army raided the residence of the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky. Nigerian troops killed over 300 of the cleric’s supporters, including three of his sons. Despite a court ruling, which ordered his unconditional release in 2016, the government has refused to set him free. Sheikh Zakzaky’s deteriorating health condition has been a matter of serious concern for his supporters.
UNSC warned of more Yemen violence
The UN Security Council has once again discussed the dire situation in Yemen. The council’s new envoy, tasked with brokering peace in the country, has told member states that an escalation of violence could happen anytime soon. Martin Griffiths says the current course of developments in Yemen could kill any prospect of peace in the country unless emergency measures are taken to bring warring parties to the negotiating table.
