Do Maiduguri attacks signal Nigeria’s counter-terror failure?
The attack by suicide bombers in the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri - capital of Borno State - was a tragedy for the area hardest hit by the Boko Haram terrorist group.
It has also proved a headache for the country’s president Muhammadu Buhari who pledged to defeat the takfiri group and whose administration claimed to have all but wiped out the terror threat posed by them. With Boko Haram responsible for the deaths of at least 20,000 and the displacement of upwards of two million, is it time the Nigerian government admitted defeat and employed new tactics?
It’s difficult to see what progress Buhari has made with Boko Haram. Backchannel dialogue between government representatives and factions of the Daesh-affiliated group to effect a permanent ceasefire was supposed to be another sign of things going well. The latest attacks in Borno State would have served to undermine any progress. How many more must die before Buhari’s administration rethinks the current anti-terror strategy?
