Pakistan: One killed, 25 injured as protest over child's rape turns violent

One person was killed and at least 25 were injured when clashes broke out between protesters and police in the Pakistani city of Karachi on Tuesday, as demonstrators took to the streets to condemn the rape and murder of a six-year old girl.

The girl’s family members staged a protest alongside hundreds of others who had gathered with the victim’s body and blocked a main road in the western Karachi suburb of Orangi Town. Protesters pelted stones at riot police, who responded by firing shots and arresting demonstrators.

Protesters were also seen moving an injured man, identified as Abdul Rehman, who later died of his gunshot wounds.According to a senior police official around 10 to 15 police officers were injured in the clashes.

Six-year-old Rabia was found dead in Karachi’s Manghopir area on Monday. A post-mortem report disclosed she had been raped before being strangled.
