Indigenous Chileans rally to demand justice

Dozens of Mapuche activists flooded the streets of Santiago on Monday, demanding justice for Chile’s indigenous people.

Scuffles erupted between riot police and activists, with the authorities deploying water cannons to disperse the protesters. Images show several activists being detained following the clashes.

Around 650,000 of Chile's 17 million people belong to the Mapuche, the country's largest indigenous group, who have long demanded autonomy from Santiago.
