Rocket blasts off carrying new crew to International Space Station

A crew of astronauts blasted off on Wednesday on board a Soyuz capsule headed for the International Space Station.

The rocket carrying the Soyuz capsule launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 1:44 p.m. EDT (11:44 p.m. Baikonur time).

NASA astronauts Drew Feustel and Ricky Arnold and Oleg Artemyev of the Russian space agency Roscosmos are scheduled to dock at the International Space Station on Friday.

Once on board the space station, the crew will conduct science and technology experiments.

The crew will join Scott Tingle of NASA, Expedition 55 Commander Anton Shkaplerov of Roscosmos and Norishige Kanai of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, who are already living and working on the space station.
