An analyst believes Vladimir Putin’s overwhelming victory in Russian election proves that he has a great deal of popular support, adding that it confirms that people see him as a “strong leader” who is in the position to maintain the country’s national independence and sovereignty at the time of confrontation with the West.

“I would also add that if the intention of the sanctions which is being imposed on Russia was to undermine Russian people’s support for Putin, then the sanctions have been unspectacular and total failure,” Alexander Mercouris, editor-in-chief of theduran.com told Press TV in an interview on Monday.
