Thousands march in Hanover against Afrin offensive

About 11,000 people, many of them Kurdish migrants, have marched in the northern German city of Hanover to protest Turkey's military operation in Afrin.

The Turkish army launched a ground offensive inside the northern Syrian region in January, which Ankara says is aimed at sweeping the Kurdish YPG militia from its border.

Demonstrators also carried flags calling for the release of Abdullah Ocalan, the jailed leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has waged a three-decade-old insurgency in southeast Turkey.

Local police said the demonstration, scheduled to mark the Kurdish New Year, was largely peaceful although they confiscated banned flags and signs linked to the banned PKK. Two people were detained, police said.
