US sanctions against Russia to spiral into trade war: Analyst

A political commentator says the US' new sanctions against Russia could possibly spiral into a “trade war,” adding that they are aimed at weakening Moscow’s position in the world.

“I definitely think that this is going to get much worse. We have two powers in the world right now that are jockeying for positions or global spheres of influence. As it is right now, both Russia and China are rising to compete with the United States for global influence and I think that a lot of these measures are just meant to attack Russia to try to weaken its position,” Jason Unruhe told Press TV in an interview on Friday.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions against Russia's spy agencies and more than a dozen individuals for their alleged meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and “malicious cyber attacks.”

The move represents another plunge in US-Russian relations despite Trump’s stated desire for improved ties.
