Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has stressed the importance of all-out cooperation among regional countries to address the existing security concerns, calling for further enhancement of such relations.

During a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Thursday, Zarif pointed to the enormous potential for the promotion of Iran-Azerbaijan ties.

“We are content with the multilateral cooperation that has been secured among regional countries, and regard such collaboration meant to counter security concerns emanating from terrorism, partially Daesh remnants, as an obligation,” the top Iranian diplomat noted.

Zarif also made a reference to the important roles that Iran and Azerbaijan play in the energy sector, and called for the quick establishment of a transport corridor from the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea.

Aliyev, for his part, hailed the upcoming visit by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Baku during the Persian New Year (Nowruz), lauding the high level of bilateral ties between Azerbaijan and Iran.

The Azerbaijani leader then touched on regional threats, describing Iran as a secure and stable country. He also called for closer cooperation in various sectors, including the transit and banking areas.

Later in the day, Zarif attended a quadrilateral meeting on connectivity with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Memmedyarov, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu with the aim of boosting regional trade.

Also on Thursday, Zarif met with his Georgian counterpart Mikheil Janelidze, and demanded the creation of the Persian Gulf–Black Sea transit corridor.

The Iranian foreign minister also called for the improvement of Tehran-Tbilisi banking cooperation, linking roads between the two countries and full utilization of Georgia’s potential in order to re-export Iranian products.

Zarif then pointed to the importance of Iran-Georgia cooperation at international levels, and expressed hope that the joint consular commission would open soon.

Janelidze also lauded the expansion of Iran-Georgia relations over the past year.

He called for joint investment in technical and engineering projects besides establishment of various companies to boost mutual trade and economic relations.
