Trump trails generic Democratic candidate by 8 points: Poll
US President Donald Trump trails a generic Democratic candidate by 8 points in a hypothetical presidential election, according to a new poll.
The generic Democratic candidate leads the Republican president 44 percent to 36 percent, according to the POLITICO/Morning Consult poll released Wednesday.
Some 79 percent of Republicans say they will support the president in 2020, while 83 percent of Democrats said the same about a generic Democratic challenger.
Democrats hold a slight advantage over Republicans among independent voters: 35 percent would support the Democrat compared to 29 percent for Trump, while 36 percent remain undecided.
About 86 percent of voters who say they backed Hillary Clinton in 2016 presidential election would choose the Democratic candidate in 2020, greater than the 80 percent of Trump voters who say they would vote for him again.
Among women, Democrats hold a 15-point lead, signaling Trump's eroding support with that demographic. Men are evenly split at 42 percent apiece.
Just days after announcing his 2020 reelection bid, the president's approval rating in the poll dropped from 46 percent last week to 43 percent this week.
Trump concluded his first year in office in January with the lowest approval rating of any first-year president in modern American history.
Recent surveys in the US show that most Americans think Trump’s first year in office was a failure and that he has divided the nation.
A poll released last month by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that a majority of Americans think the direction of the United States has worsened over the last year, mainly due to a surge in racism and violence fueled by Trump.
