Mueller probing whether Kushner’s business ties influenced US policy

US federal investigators are probing whether Jared Kushner's business talks with foreigners influenced the policies adopted by the administration of his father-in-law, President Donald Trump.

The US Justice Department’s Special Counsel Robert Mueller has asked witnesses about Kushner's attempts to secure financing for his family's real estate investments, focusing specifically on his talks with people from Turkey, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Russia and China, NBC News reported on Friday.

Mueller’s team has also expressed interest in a meeting Kushner held at Trump Tower in December 2016 with former Qatari Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al-Thani, NBC reported, citing unnamed people familiar with Mueller’s investigation.

The Qatari embassy in Washington rejected the assertions, saying in a statement that Doha “has not been approached nor has it had any contact with the Special Counsel’s Office on any matters.”

The special counsel is investigating Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and whether there was any collusion between Moscow and Trump’s election campaign.

Russia has denied interfering in the election, and Trump has said there was no collusion.

A spokesman for Kushner attorney Abbe Lowell said the report was the “mischief” of unnamed sources conducting a“misinformation campaign” to mislead the news media.

Kushner’s family business, Kushner Companies, is facing some $1.4 billion in debt that is due in 2019, NBC News cited the sources as saying.

Earlier this week, The Washington Post reported that officials from China,Mexico, the UAE and Israel have talked privately about ways to manipulate Kushner using his business arrangements, financial difficulties and lack of foreign policy experience.

The newspaper report quoted unnamed American officials familiar with intelligence reports on the issue.

Kushner lost his access to top-secret US intelligence information in recent weeks because of his inability to obtain a security clearance at that level.
