UN Syria resolution

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously voted in favor of a nationwide ceasefire in Syria.

The resolution calls for a 30-day truce without delay and aims to allow aid access and medical evacuations. It also demands that all parties immediately lift the sieges of populated areas. The resolution does not cover Daesh and Nusra Front terrorists. The text was drafted by Kuwait and Sweden. Following the approval of the measure, Russia and the US traded barbs.

Russia probe in US

Democrats on the US House Intelligence Committee have defended official investigations into claims of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

In a 10-page memo, Democrats sharply criticized a previously-released Republican memo as a "transparent effort to undermine" investigations by the FBI, the Justice Department and Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The Democrats’ text defends the FBI's obtaining of warrants to conduct temporary surveillance of Carter Page, an associate of President Donald Trump's election campaign. The Democrats say the FBI considered Page to be an agent of the Russian government.

France scuffles

Clashes erupt as vegan and animal activists protest against French President Emmanuel Macron during his visit to the country's main agricultural fair in Paris.

Macron was greeted with loud whistling and booing by farmers on his arrival at the opening of the 55th Paris International Agricultural Show. The visit to the fair was Macron's first since his inauguration. The fair is a politically important event that follows several protests by farmers across France. French farmers are angry over producer prices, European Union trade talks and Chinese land purchases. The European Union is engaged in trade talks with four South American countries that critics say could force about 20,000 French farms to go bankrupt. The French president said he would fight for French farmers.

Slamming US sanctions

Beijing has protested against Washington's decision to impose sanctions against Chinese companies accused of conducting illicit economic deals with North Korea.

China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Geng Shuang said Beijing is strongly opposed to the United States' unilateral bans on Chinese entities and individuals. He said China has asked the US to immediately cease the wrong practice to avoid undermining cooperation between Beijing and Washington. On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced the largest package of sanctions against North Korea-linked shipping companies, vessels and trade businesses. The measures apply to firms located or registered in several countries, including China. Trump says the bans on North Korea are aimed at forcing Pyongyang to roll back its nuclear and weapons programs.

Koreas' relations

A high-level North Korean delegation has arrived in the South to attend the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

The officials will be in South Korea until Tuesday. Details of their itinerary have yet to be released. South Korean media has cited the Unification Ministry as saying that it will focus on holding further bilateral talks. The delegation reportedly includes diplomats in charge of the North's nuclear program. Daughter of President Donald Trump, Ivanka, is also in the South, but there is no indication that the two sides may hold any meeting. The North Korean delegation is being led by former General Kim Yong Chol. His attendance has triggered some South Koreans to gather at the border crossing in protest.
