Turkey's Afrin operation

Turkey’s month-long military operation in Syria’s Afrin is taking a new turn as pro-Damascus forces have begun entering the region. Syria which regards Turkey’s move as a violation of its sovereignty deployed its forces to the area to support the local Kurds and clear the area from pockets of Daesh. Upon their arrival, Turkey’s army targeted the positions of the Syrian government forces, risking further military escalation between the two countries. Syria’s military deployment to Afrin seems to have placed the US-backed Kurdish militants on the same side as pro-Damascus forces. This further complicates the situation in Syria’s north where the anti-Damascus US forces are also present.

Bahrain revolution anniversary

As people in Bahrain were marking seven years since the start of an uprising against the Manama regime, new indications show the rights situation in the country is already deteriorating. On Wednesday, a top Bahraini court sentenced a prominent activist to five years behind the bars.  Nabeel Rajab, who has been a leading figure in Bahrain’s pro-democracy protests, was given the sentence after he accused Bahrain’s prison authorities of torture. Rajab – already serving a two-year sentence over an anti-regime news interview - has also apparently drawn the ire of the Al-Khalifa regime for criticizing Saudi Arabia’s air strikes in Yemen. Both charges have clearly exposed the dilapidated rights situation of Bahrain. And they specifically revealed the extent of the submissiveness of Bahrain’s leadership toward Saudi Arabia.
