Spain FM due in Iran for talks on enhancing relations

Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Alfonso Dastis

Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Alfonso Dastis is scheduled to pay a visit to Tehran to hold talks with senior Iranian officials.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Tuesday that the top Spanish diplomat would arrive in Tehran at the head of a high-ranking politico-economic delegation later in the day for a two-day visit.

Dastis plans to discuss avenues for bolstering bilateral relations in talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and other senior authorities.

Iranian Ambassador to Madrid Mohammad Hassan Fadaei Fard said the Spanish foreign minister's scheduled visit would be important in mutual, regional and international terms and would create new developments in relations.

He added that the two countries are resolved to boost political and economic ties after the implementation of the multilateral nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries in 2015.

Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – the United States, France, Britain, Russia and China – plus Germany signed the nuclear agreement on July 14, 2015 and started implementing it on January 16, 2016.

Under the JCPOA, Iran undertook to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions imposed against Tehran.

On the sidelines of the 53rd Munich Security Conference in February 2017, the Iranian and Spanish foreign ministers held a meeting and discussed bilateral relations and leading regional issues, including the fight against terrorism.

Zarif invited his counterpart to pay a visit to Iran.

Zarif and Dastis also discussed regional issues in a phone call in June 2017.

French FM due in Iran, Russia for Syria talks

Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Tuesday he would embark on a two-leg visit to Russia and Iran in the coming days to discuss the latest developments vis-à-vis the war in Syria.

Russia and Iran have both been offering Syria advisory military help upon request from the Syrian government.

The Iranian foreign minister said on Monday Russia can play a key role in bringing about a "paradigm shift" in the Persian Gulf region through its rising influence in the Middle East.

In a post on his official Twitter account, Zarif said, "With Russia's sober strategic perspective and its growing influence in West Asia, it can play an instrumental role to help a paradigm shift in the Persian Gulf to one based on dialogue and inclusion."

A senior Iranian official also said in January Iranian military advisory forces entered Syria at the request of the Syrian government and will leave the Arab country after the success of the fight against terrorism.

Hossein Jaberi Ansari, the Iranian foreign minister’s senior assistant for special political affairs, made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Syrian peace conference in the Russian resort of Sochi.

Sochi hosts talks between the Syrian government and the opposition in the hope of paving the way for a peaceful settlement of the conflict gripping the Arab state.
