US mostly responsible for destruction of Syria: Analyst

Imperial powers, mostly the United States, are responsible for the destruction of Syria, according to Myles Hoenig, an American political analyst and activist.

Hoenig, a former Green Party candidate for Congress, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Wednesday while commenting on a statement by US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley.

Speaking at the UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday, Haley urged Russia to use its leverage over Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to end the conflict as the UN envoy warned of a "worrying and dangerous" moment in the nearly seven-year bloodshed.

“Russia can push the regime to commit to seeking a real peace in Syria,” Haley said.

Moscow and Washington support opposing sides in the Syrian conflict. Russia assists the Syrian government and has been carrying out an aerial bombardment campaign against terrorist positions in Syria.

“The Russians were asked by the legitimate government of Syria to intervene to fight ISIS [Daesh] and other reactionary forces fighting the people and the government. Like in all interventions, it has been brutal for all sides. It is the role of the US and Israel that poses the greatest dangers in the entire Middle East theatre of war,” Hoenig said.

“The US’s main goal is expansionism and maintaining economic control over natural resources. This has been going on as long as it has replaced Great Britain, and to a lesser degree France, as the dominant colonial power. It is of no difference to the US foreign policy administration and Wall Street which Assad it is or who replaces him when that does happen,” he stated.

“Israel’s role is a bit simpler. It covets both Syrian oil and water. The Golan Heights, occupied Syrian territory, holds oil which Israel has already leased to US companies, including those controlled by former Vice President Cheney. Water is also a key resource for its northern communities,” he said.

“All parties are responsible in part for the destruction of Syria but as always, outside imperial powers, mostly the US, are most involved in creating the chaos and divisions within,” the analyst concluded.
