US President Donald Trump has triggered major controversies since taking the helm at the White House in January last year. His comments and stances on minorities like African Americans and Muslims have made headlines. Trump has also been entangled in high profile sexual misconduct scandals with over a dozen women speaking out against him. The US president has dismissed the allegations as a campaign by his opponents, but many critics believe Trump is a sexist. This has apparently put the president on a collision course with the MeToo movement. Me Too, mainly through social media, raises awareness about sexual assault and harassment. But the US president is not a fan at all.
Bahrain uprising anniversary
The Bahraini popular uprising’s seventh anniversary is around the corner. While people continue protesting and challenging the legitimacy of the ruling Al Khalifah dynasty across the Persian Gulf kingdom, the regime’s crackdown rages on as before. A new report by the Bahrain Forum for Human Rights has documented nearly 1,000 human rights violations across Bahrain throughout the month of January. According to the group, a total of 995 cases involving arbitrary arrests, unfair trials, violations against religious freedoms, enforced disappearances, and torture were recorded. Recently, Human Rights Watch accused Bahrain of deporting a number of stateless Bahrainis who had previously been stripped of their citizenship. The advocacy group has demanded Manama immediately put an end to the arbitrary deportations and restore citizenship to those who had been left stateless.
