Iranians mark 39th revolution anniversary

Iranians, in their millions, have staged nationwide rallies, marking the 39th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution that toppled the US-backed Pahlavi monarchy. Imam Khomeini who led the revolution, was forced to spend fourteen years in exile. The revolution came in the wake of years-long protests against the authoritarian regime which used heavy-handed tactics to crush growing voices of discontent. After the revolution, Iranians, for the first time in centuries, managed to elect a government by going to the polls.  They also got their first taste of national independence; since the Shah was largely depended on the West notably the US and UK who benefited from Iran’s natural resources including its oil fields. This year’s marches also come a few months after mass pro-establishment rallies poured cold water on Israeli and US plots to instigate violence in Iran.

North, South Korea thaw

Implications of a historic meeting between South Korean president and a high-level delegation from North Korea on the sidelines of the Winter Olympics still continue. Many say the meeting - which was marked by a surprise invitation for President Moon Jae-in to visit Pyongyang - is already contributing to a thaw in tensions on the Korean Peninsula. But there is one specific party which is not happy about any chance of a thaw in relations between the two Koreas. The United States of America. US Vice President Mike Pence who participated in the inauguration ceremonies of Winter Olympics has made Washington’s dissatisfaction with Pyongyang’s diplomatic overture toward Seoul clear.
