Jim Carrey boycotts Facebook over Russia ‘interference’
Canadian-American actor Jim Carrey is encouraging Facebook users to delete their accounts over the social media’s role in Russia’s “intervention” in the 2016 presidential election.
Carrey took to Twitter on Tuesday to make the announcement about Facebook.
“I’m dumping my @facebook stock and deleting my page because @facebook profited from Russian interference in our elections and they’re not doing enough to stop it,” Carrey tweeted, along with a drawing of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The American online social media and social networking service company announced in October 2017 that as many as 126 million people may have been exposed to contents posted by accounts related to the Russian government.

An investigation has been launched to find out whether the Russian government coordinated with US President Donald Trump’s aides after the intelligence community’s conclusion that the Kremlin helped with the New York billionaire’s campaign effort ahead of winning the White House, an allegation dismissed both by Moscow and the president.

Facebook’s product manager for civic engagement, Samidh Chakrabarti, admitted in January that the company has not done well in dealing with the issue.
“Facebook was originally designed to connect friends and family — and it has excelled at that,” he said. “But as unprecedented numbers of people channel their political energy through this medium, it’s being used in unforeseen ways with societal repercussions that were never anticipated.”
