Finland: Thousands denounce unemployment benefit cuts in Helsinki

Finland

Thousands protested against cuts to unemployment benefits in Helsinki on Friday, as part of the activation model for unemployment security introduced by Prime Minister Juha Sipila in January.

The proposed model reportedly urges job-seekers to take on odd jobs for at least 18 hours over three months, or attend a job-related training course. Those who do not comply will be penalised, reports suggest.

The large-scale protest was organised by several trade unions, including the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK), the Finnish Industrial Union, the Finnish Construction Union, the Transport Workers’ Union (AKT), and the Trade Union for the Public and Welfare Sectors (JHL). (RUPTLY)
