Trump's one year in office

January 20, 2017 was a political turning point for the United States. Businessman-turned-politician Donald Trump, who confounded expectations by winning the race for the White House, was officially sworn into office and American politics have ever since gone through drastic changes. Trump, who campaigned on protectionist policies, has spared no effort to remove the legacies of his predecessor by trying to pull out of various multilateral agreements. The Iran nuclear deal which is a hard-earned achievement of diplomacy is among them. Although reluctantly, Trump has so far waved the nuclear-related sanctions on Iran. However, he has recently threatened that he will not do so the next time, unless some terms of the accord are fixed. While running for president, Trump came down hard on his predecessors’ policy of deploying troops and waging costly wars in the Middle East and beyond. In stark contrast to his campaign promise of not overspending, Trump proposed the largest military budget increase in American history and even deployed more troops to Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.

Turkey's incursion into Syria

Tensions in Turkey’s southern borders with Syria had been moving toward the boiling point for a while. Ankara had warned several times that it would not accept any effort toward the establishment of a Kurdish state in northern Syria. And when signs emerged that the United States was planning to create a Kurdish border force, Ankara knew that it was time to act. Heavy artillery was accordingly moved to the south in what was seen as a preparation of a major cross-border offensive. But a military attack against the Kurds that are strongly supported by the US is very unlikely not to draw a response from Washington. And with that, a surge in tensions between the US and Turkey over Kurds could be just around the corner.
