Eric Trump says his father is not racist, 'sees one color: green'
US President Donald Trump's son, Eric, has dismissed accusations that his father is a racist, amid reported remarks by Trump that some immigrants from Africa and Haiti come from “sh*thole” countries.
"My father sees one color – green. He cares about the economy," Eric Trump said during an interview with Fox News, referring to the color of the US dollar.
"He does not see race. He’s the least racist person I have ever met in my entire life," he added.
Eric Trump cited gains in the economy for African-Americans as evidence his father is not racist and accused the media of covering the figures up.
On Thursday, several lawmakers attending a White House meeting on immigration claimed that the president used “sh*thole” to refer to a number of African and Latin American nations.
During the meeting, Trump also expressed preference for accepting European immigrants from countries such as Norway.
Trump’s alleged remarks have sparked widespread criticism in the US and abroad. He was widely condemned by many African countries and by international rights organizations for the comments.
Democratic Congressman John Lewis, who is an African American civil rights leader, told ABC News, "I think he’s a racist."
Protesters across the United States staged anti-racism rallies on Monday in response to Trump’s vulgar phrase.
Many immigration advocates have criticized Trump as a demagogue who has unfairly portrayed non-European immigrants as criminals and inherently suspicious.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump characterized Mexican migrants living in the US as murderers and rapists and said the US would build a wall on the US-Mexico border to keep illegal immigrants from entering the country.
