Lebanon to ban Spielberg's latest movie over Israel support: Report
Lebanese authorities have recommended a ban on US movie director Steven Spielberg's latest movie reportedly over his support for Israel.
Spielberg's political thriller film "The Post" was planned to premiere in movie theaters in Beirut on Thursday, but movies theaters across the capital city have taken down posters for the film, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday.
The recommendation for banning the movie requires the official approval of Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk, but observers say the formal procedure is unlikely to stop the ban.
According to a leaked US State Department memo from 2007, Spielberg was blacklisted by the Arab League for supporting Israel.
Lebanon and Israel are technically at war. Israel launched two wars on Lebanon in 2000 and 2006, in both of which the Hezbollah resistance movement inflicted heavy losses on the regime’s military. Over the past months, Israeli officials have threatened another war on Lebanon.
Israeli forces regularly violate Lebanon’s sovereignty and target Lebanese patrol soldiers.
Israel in September conducted its biggest military drill in almost two decades on the Lebanese border to simulate “the next confrontation with Hezbollah.”
Tens of thousands of Israeli air, sea and land personnel took part in the war game, which also included aircraft, boats, and submarines.
Lebanese army chief Commander General Joseph Aoun has ordered the country’s forces to stand fully ready on Lebanon’s southern border to respond to the Israeli military’s threats and violations.”
