Dismissing Trump’s call

Russia says the Iran nuclear deal cannot be amended and that Moscow will oppose any attempt to hamper the 2015 landmark agreement. Deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, says Russia has a very negative stance on US President Donald Trump’s statements about the deal. He added that the prospect of the US withdrawing from the accord will deliver a very serious blow to the whole system of international agreements. He stressed that Moscow would continue to explain to Washington the viciousness of its sanction policy toward Tehran. Russia has vowed to oppose any attempts to undermine the existing agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

US nuclear weapons

An arms control advocacy group has lashed out at the United States’ plans to produce new nuclear weapons. The Arms Control Association said Washington’s decision to produce what it calls small nukes will expand the scenarios under which the US might use nuclear weapons. It added that the US plans increase the risk of nuclear arms use. The American daily, Huffington Post, had already reported that Washington was seeking to produce new nuclear weapons in 2018. According to the report, the Trump administration had called for the development of smaller nukes, arguing the United States’ current nukes are too destructive to use. Washington claimed it wanted the new weapons for “further deterrence”.

Qatar-UAE row

Qatar says its air space has been violated for a second time by an Emirati military jet since last December. Doha has lodged a new complaint with the United Nations. It says the plane flew over Qatar's special economic zone without prior authorization earlier this month. Qatar added that the repetition of the act was evidence of the UAE violating international law. Qatar lodged its first protest at the world body on Friday over a similar violation that it says happened in December. The UAE has denied the accusations saying Abu Dhabi would officially respond. The UAE, Bahrain and Egypt joined Saudi Arabia in a campaign against Doha in June and cut ties with the Persian Gulf country. They have imposed diplomatic and trade sanctions on Qatar, accusing it of destabilizing the region. Qatar has rejected the allegation.

Crimea tensions

Moscow has stationed more regiments of its advanced S-400 air defense missile system in Crimea. The latest deployment represents the second division armed with S-400 air defense systems on the peninsula. Russia says the new division will be based next to the town of Sevastopol to control the airspace over the border with Ukraine. People in Crimea voted for re-joining the Russian Federation in a referendum in March 2014. The move angered the West, which branded it as Moscow’s annexation of the territory.

Gaza funeral

Palestinians have taken to the streets of the besieged Gaza Strip for the funeral of a fisherman who was killed by Egyptian naval forces. Palestine’s Interior Ministry says Abdullah Zidan came under fire in Palestinian waters off the town of Rafah, which straddles the Gaza-Egypt border. Palestinian officials have called on Cairo to immediately launch an inquiry into the incident. Meanwhile, the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, has condemned the 33-year-old’s death as unjustified. Fishermen in the occupied territories have also suspended their work for one day to express their discontent.
