CNN's Anderson Cooper condemns Trump’s racist slur

American TV journalist Anderson Cooper

American TV journalist Anderson Cooper has slammed US President Donald Trump, describing him as a "racist".

Trump referred to countries such as El Salvador, Haiti and certain African nations, as “shithole” countries, urging lawmakers to make efforts to stop immigrants from these countries entering the US, and instead accept immigrants from countries such as Norway.

"Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” he told lawmakers during a closed-door meeting in the Oval Office on Thursday, according to The Washington Post.

Cooper, a CNN news anchor, said Trump’s offensive comments represented the latest evidence about his "racist" views.

"Not racial. Not racially charged. Racist … the sentiment the President expressed today is a racist sentiment," Cooper said, adding that, "For him to claim that all the countries of Africa are shitholes is woefully ignorant."

Earlier this week, the Trump administration had ended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 260,000 immigrants from El Salvador, forcing them to gradually leave the US.

In defense of the immigrants, Cooper said the immigrant community had made huge contribution to the US society.

Immigrants have  “been through more, withstood more, fought back against more injustice... than our President ever has".

During the 2016 presidential race, Trump campaigned for "a total and complete shutdown" of US borders on those he deemed as undesirable.
