“1 North American Dead End” may become US embassy address in Moscow

The US and Russian capitals are quarreling over street signs as Washington decides to rename the street in front of the Russian embassy for a murdered Russian opposition figure.

The Council of the District of Columbia said in a statement on Wednesday that it had voted unanimously to change the street name in memory of Boris Nemtsov, who was killed just outside the Kremlin in February 2015.

The council said it approved “the re-naming of the portion of Wisconsin Avenue in front of the Russian Embassy to honor slain democracy activist Boris Nemtsov.”

The latest decision was met with opposition from Mikhail Degtyaryov, a Russian State Duma deputy, who has proposed the US embassy to sit on “1 North American Dead End” in Moscow.

“We should rename the driveway in honor of the intrusive foreign policy of the US,” said Degtyaryov, adding that he was proposing a change to Moscow city officials.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio initially introduced legislation to change the name of the street in Washington in early 2017 but his bill stalled.

“Whether it is looking at a street sign or thousands of pieces of correspondence addressed ‘1 Boris Nemtsov Plaza,’ it will be abundantly clear to the Kremlin that the intimidation and murder of opposition figures does not go unnoticed,” said the 2016 presidential contender at the time.

Nemtsov’s case came to an end after a jury at a court in Moscow convicted five men of carrying out the murder.

His supporters, however, maintain that the case was never fully investigated.
