Rich vs. Poor

The economic gap between the rich and the poor across the world has widened to record levels. In many countries the wealth of just a few individuals exceeds that of millions of people. The super-rich are exacerbating the economic inequality crisis. The global economic system has allowed billionaires to add to their wealth at an unprecedented pace. They have been able to dodge taxes, push down wages and use their wealth to manipulate politics. And the situation is worsening by the day. The richest individuals in the world added one trillion dollars to their wealth in 2017. That’s over four times the gain they had in 2016. The jump in their wealth has been revealed by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index which is a ranking of the 500 richest people on earth.

UAE controversial stance

The United Arab Emirates which has turned into a hawkish state in recent years has adopted a new controversial stance on regional issues. The stance is seen by countries other than the UAE’s Saudi ally as divisive. The UAE’s minister of state for foreign affairs Anwar Gargash has said on Twitter: the Arab world needs to come together under Saudi-Egyptian leadership to push back against Iran and Turkey. Gargash said: The Arab world is at an impasse and the solution is to cooperate in the face of surrounding regional ambitions. The sectarian and partisan approach is not an acceptable alternative. The Arab world will not be led by Tehran and Ankara. The stance is seen by many as un-Islamic as the religion’s teachings show it does not differentiate between people.
