British police have arrested a man on suspicion of plotting terror attacks in a city in Northern England and continue searching some other buildings in the area to prevent possible terror attacks ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The 21-year-old was arrested on Friday night in the city of Sheffield for “preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism," a police spokesman said on Saturday. The man was not identified or charged.

Police were also searching two buildings for possible suspects on Saturday.

The latest arrest is the fifth since December 19, when police detained four suspects in the South Yorkshire city and nearby Chesterfield in Derbyshire.

Two of the men arrested have been charged with one count of engaging in the preparation of an act of terrorism. They are due to appear at a court London on January 19. Another also remains in custody, while a 41-year-old one in Sheffield was released on Saturday, according to police.

The Metropolitan police said on Thursday that there was no specific threat but called on people to remain vigilant in London.  They said armed police forces will patrol London on New Year’s Eve, along with covert officers and dog units.

The measures are part of Scotland Yard’s plan to meet any threat as people celebrate the end of a year.

The UK was hit by a wave of terrorist attacks in 2017, with the greatest death toll occurring in late May at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester Arena, where a bomb blast killed 22 people.

London alone was rocked by four major attacks this year, including the attack on the palace of Westminster in March, in which five people were killed; an attack at London Bridge in June, during which three terrorists killed eight people before being killed themselves.

An attack was also took place near a mosque in north London during the holy month of Ramadan and another at Parsons Green station in south-west London.
