Syria talks

A new round of UN-sponsored peace talks between the Syrian government and foreign-backed opposition groups have resumed in Geneva, Switzerland. This is the eighth round of negotiations that first began in February 2017 in an effort to resolve the Syrian crisis diplomatically. Permanent representative of the Syrian government Bashar Ja’afari and his delegation arrived at the venue of the talks earlier today. Previous reports said the Syrian delegation would not participate in the talks. The Syrian opposition groups have accused the Damascus government of putting obstacles in the way of the talks by imposing new conditions. A spokesman of the opposition has claimed that Bashar Ja’afari has told UN special envoy Staffan de Mistura that they won’t negotiate with the opposition directly.
