Bomb attack kills journalist in Somali capital
A Somali television journalist has been killed by a car bomb in front of his children in the Somali capital city of Mogadishu.
Mohamed Ibrahim Gabow, a journalist working for Kalsan TV, had just left his home on Monday afternoon in Mogadishu when a bomb planted inside the vehicle exploded. He later died in hospital.
Police Officer Ibrahim Mohamed confirmed that "the explosive device was attached beneath the driver's seat of the car."
Mohamed Abdirahman, a relative, said "he was a professional journalist dedicated to working for the public."
"We don't know why they killed him in front of his children," the relative added.
Abidirisak Mire, a colleague of Gabow, said people were unsure why he would have been targeted. "We don't know the motive," he said.
No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Somalia is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 45 Somali reporters were killed between 2007 and 2015.
The al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab Takfiri militant group has been blamed for a string of attacks against journalists.
Reporters Without Borders ranked Somalia 172 out of 180 countries on its 2015 press freedom index.
A 22,000-strong multinational African Union force in Somalia is expected to pull out and hand over the country's security to the Somali military by the end of 2020.
