The White House is taking advantage of the latest terrorist attack in New York City by calling on US Congress to overhaul the immigration system.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Monday that the attack near the Port Authority Bus Terminal offers yet another piece of evidence that the US needs stronger borders.

Akayed Ullah, 27, has been identified by police as the suspect. He is an immigrant from Bangladesh living in Brooklyn.

“This attack underscores the need for Congress to work with the president on immigration reforms that enhance the national security and public safety,” Sanders said. “We must protect our borders and we must ensure that individuals entering our country are not coming to do harm to people, and we must move to a merit-based immigration system.”

No one was killed in the attack, apparently inspired by the Daesh Takfiri group.

“This attack comes as our coalition continues to make great gains against ISIS,” said the White House spokeswoman. “There is still more work to be done on the ground in shrinking ISIL-controlled areas and the plan to eradicate ISIL is moving forward. But we must also destroy the evil ideology that is behind ISIS in the attacks like today."

"The president has successfully rallied the world behind this cause, and we will not stop until this is accomplished.”

The assailant, now in custody, detonated a pipe bomb strapped to his body in Manhattan’s busiest subway corridor but his makeshift weapon sputtered.

He sustained major injuries himself and was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, while three others suffered minor injuries.

According to authorities, he intended to launch a suicide attack in the subway but failed.

“Our lives revolve around the subway,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “The choice of New York is always for a reason, because we are a beacon to the world. And we actually show that a society of many faiths and many backgrounds can work.”

The mayor added that no other devices were found at the scene and that Ullah acted on his own, adding that, “The terrorists want to undermine that… They yearn to attack New York City.”
