Poland: Thousands protest new judicial reform proposals

Poland

Thousands protested against proposed new judicial legislation in front of the Presidential Palace in Warsaw, on Friday. The legislation seeks to give the government greater control over courts and Poland's election commission. Similar protests were held throughout the country.

Protesters chanted "Constitution" and "Free Courts" while waving Polish and EU flags. The demonstration was held under the slogan 'Free Courts, Free Elections, Free Poland.'

One organizer Bogumil Kolmasiak stated, "We want free courts, independent from politicians, we want the right to free, un-manipulated elections, in consequence we want a free Poland, friendly to everyone." Parliament gave approval to the judicial reforms earlier on Friday.
