US trooper shot and killed in Texas

A Texas trooper was shot and killed near Dallas on Thursday, reports said.

Authorities in the United States say a Texas state trooper has been shot and killed and they are looking for a man in connection to the deadly incident.

The trooper, who has not been identified, was killed on Thursday evening on Interstate 45 south of Fairfield, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) south of Dallas. He worked for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the suspect shot and killed the trooper with a rifle during a traffic stop.

The suspect then fled the scene. Authorities from multiple agencies are searching for the suspect.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the TXDPS trooper shot and killed this afternoon in Freestone County," the Navarro County Office of Emergency Management said in a statement.

The Waller County Sheriff's Office said the suspect's vehicle was spotted in Hempstead, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) south of Fairfield.
