US says Iranian charged over leaking Game of Thrones
The United States says it has charged an Iranian over leaking unaired episodes of Game of Thrones, a medieval fantasy epic show.
Prosecutors claimed Tuesday that the person, named Behzad Mesri, hacked into the HBO cable TV network and stole episodes and plot summaries for unaired programs including Game of Thrones.
The whereabouts of Mesri, whose aliased are mentioned as Skote Vahshat or Mr. Smith, is not known and he has not been arrested, according to a spokesman with the US attorney’s office.
A sealed indictment that was released on Tuesday described him as a “self-professed expert,” alleging that he has worked on behalf of the Iranian government.
At a press conference, Joon Kim, the acting US attorney for the Southern District of New York, called him “an experienced and sophisticated hacker who has been wreaking havoc on computer systems around the world for some time.”
"Mersi allegedly organized his hacking scheme from halfway around the world, in Iran," Kim said. "He now stands charged with federal crimes, and although not arrested today, he will forever have to look over his shoulder."
The HBO files reportedly began leaking on July 30.
The Washington Post recently reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump is pressuring the Department of Justice to come up with new cases against Tehran.
Trump’s anti-Iran approach follows his last month refusal to recertify the Iran nuclear deal and his threats to pull out of the historic deal also endorsed by other US allies.
According to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Washington’s 40-year-old policy of imposing sanctions on Tehran has “immunized us.”
