India: Several dead, many trapped in building collapse inferno

Several people have died and many more are feared trapped under the rubble after a fire at a plastic bag factory in the northern Indian city of Ludhiana on Monday caused the building to collapse.

The three-storey building collapsed at about midday local time (6.30am GMT), after a fire broke out at 8am. Two of the dead are believed to be firefighters who were trying to put out the fire, according to the local media.

A team from India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to the site of to carry out search and rescue operations.

Bulldozers have started removing the debris, police said, as the search for missing people continued with the aid of local residents. A local fire official said they were working on finding out what caused the blaze.
