Greece declared a state of emergency on the island of Symi on Tuesday after a downpour swept cars into the sea, damaged homes and shops, and cut off electricity and water supplies.

Volunteers and equipment from the army and regional government were deployed to the eastern Aegean island to restore roads and repair damage caused by the storm, which began on Monday, the Shipping Ministry said in a statement.

Firefighters also arrived on the island with water pumps to remove floodwater. Divers were checking if anyone had been trapped in cars, the ministry said.
